Insulation is the upgrade most often bought for the wrong reason and most often useful for a different one. The Three Constructions

A single skin door is one layer of steel with a formed frame behind it. A two layer door adds polystyrene board bonded to the back of that skin. A three layer sandwich has a back skin as well, with polyurethane foamed in between so the panel behaves as one bonded unit. The third is stiffer, quieter and considerably heavier than the first.

The Weight Consequence

An insulated door can weigh half as much again as the single skin door it replaces. That means a different spring specification, not simply the same hardware carried over. A heavy new door on the old counterbalance is heavy at every point in its travel, wears the hardware and puts the operator under load it was never sized for.

Where It Is Worth the Money Here

An attached garage that shares a wall with living space, a workshop that gets used in the afternoon, or a room above the garage all justify the spend. A detached bay used for storage rarely does on thermal grounds alone, though the noise reduction and the stiffness are still real benefits.

Insulation Without a New Door
